ATTENTION! READ THIS BEFORE LISTENING! (If you want context.)

(This is my Secret Samol 2020 gift for Art_Cryptid. This was so fun to work on and I hope it makes you laugh AND cry!

Prompt was Fero Feritas/Emmanuel Aracia La Salle/Lem King with domestic fluff, found family, and a hint of relationship angst with a happy ending!)

Emmanuel was just opening the back door to let some fresh air into the hot kitchen when a scruffy-looking cat darted in, meowing loudly. Lem’s head jerked up from the book he had been poring over at the table.
“Fero? Is that you?”
Emmanuel immediately started divvying up the leftover nutcake from that morning as the cat bristled and turned back into halfling form.
“Hey!” Fero laughed.
Lem and Emmanuel exchanged relieved looks. It had been a few months since Fero’s last visit and they had been starting to worry. Lem immediately noticed something new though.
“Fero, is- is that an instrument you’re holding?” he said, surprised.
Fero plopped down cross-legged on the floor and pulled the wooden instrument onto his lap.
“Yeah, I was messing around and figured out how to make this thing. I’ve been calling it a dulcimer!”
Fero saw their surprised looks and held up his hand. “But! Before you say anything or start asking me a million questions, I have something for- well, I- look, I know I’m bad at talking about- I mean, just listen, okay?” he said, turning a little red.
“Oh, and Lem, I guess you can play along. If you feel like it.”
Fero cleared his throat.
“One more thing. Don’t either of you fucking dare laugh OR cry.”
And with that warning, Fero started plucking the instrument. Lem and Emmanuel quickly sat down, a little stunned but eager to hear whatever Fero had to share with them.

As the last chord died, Lem looked at Emmanuel and then back at Fero, his eyes shining. Emmanuel put a hand on his arm to warn him, but it was too late, Fero started to stand up and, in the same motion, turned into a bird and flew out the window.
“Fero!” Lem called after him.
“He’ll be back. Don’t worry, my love,” Emmanuel said quietly.
Lem leaned his head against Emmanuel’s shoulder and sighed. His boyfriend was right, Fero would be back before long. This was his home.

lyrics

Out in the woods sometimes I hear a bird sing
Just the way, I mean sort of, I’ve heard you play the violin
I go on flying, I’m determined to explore
But I can’t help picturing this, this fucking cottage door

[Chorus]
A window to fly through
Some people I think are alright
I guess sometimes home can be more
Than a place to spend the night

Last week I was prowling, before the break of dawn
I caught the smell of bread on the wind, with maybe a hint of pecan
With the scent came an image of you, baking a cake
And I know I don’t need to eat, but I felt a confusing ache

[Chorus]

So I guess if it’s not too much trouble, keep a lamp in the window for me
Maybe I’ll drop by more often, like, I mean, if I’m ever free
I can’t quite explain how it feels to come home to you two
Maybe like making a creature, I guess, but it’s me that’s made anew

[Chorus x2]
